Limarí (Chile)

The Limarí river basin in the Coquimbo Region in Northern Central Chile is a relevant export producer of high value perennial crops as citric fruits, table grapes, wine and avocado. Their intensive agricultural production on ca. 30.000 ha is extremely vulnerable to climate variability and change as it depends on the hydrological and snow melt processes originating in the high Andean cordillera. After a long lasting drought since 2008, the irrigation reservoirs in the Limarí basin accounted finally 3% of their storage capacity in 2015. Hence there is a strong interest to improve the knowledge on hydrological processes under climate variability and to provide reliable long and short term water availability projections in order to be able to increase water use efficiency.
